Vitex negundo, commonly known as Nirgundi (Sambhalu, Sinduvaar, Vavili, Nochi ) or the Five-leaved Chaste tree, is a widely available plant across India. Its easy availability, combined with its known benefits in treating arthritic disorders, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, makes it an effective herb for managing joint pain.
In Ayurveda, Nirgundi is believed to promote hair growth, aid in respiratory issues, and relieve rheumatic inflammation. It also supports healthy eye function, helps with hypo-pigmentation of the skin, reduces spleen enlargement, and alleviates painful teething. Additionally, Nirgundi is known to promote healthy menstrual flow and support overall urinary health.
Modern applications of Nirgundi include the use of Nirgundi leaves powder, which, when mixed with warm water, can be applied to rheumatic joint swellings and sprains. The warm infusion of Nirgundi leaves is also used to cleanse and heal ulcers more effectively. Smoke from dried Nirgundi leaves is beneficial for relieving catarrh and headaches. Nirgundi has been shown to aid in the expulsion of phlegm, and it is also effective against coughs, fevers, and infections.
